To erect the stopping, the straps are attached to some strong fixed point, such as a roof bolt, and the canopy is lifted into the airstream which inflates the parachute into place.  The differential air pressure which develops across the stopping holds it in place and seals the stopping perimeter tightly to the mine walls.  An air velocity of at least 80 fmp is needed to raise a parachute stopping into place and a differential air pressure of at least 0.30 in. wg. is required for a good air seal.

The stopping perimeter should be at least 1.5 times larger than the perimeter of the airway when used.
